Sierra Nevada Anime Fans Unite, or SNAFU Con, will be this October 22nd and 23rd at the Grand Sierra Resort. There is now a website and forum at snafucon.com feel free to visit the website, pre-registering is recommended, as funds generated will go to fund the event. Now, as guest coordinator, is my time to start pimping for the con. On the forums, interest has been noticed in a fur suiting panel. I'm not into suiting myself, but if it's what the people want then by all means. So, to that end anyone with particular know-how on the subject willing to do a panel should talk with me and the rest of the staff about how where and when that would happen. Some last thoughts, there will be an artists alley, so feel free to get on the forums at snafucon.com and voice your interest in setting up there. I don't have a problem with mature stuff, but keep in mind that you'll need to keep it where the children won't burn their eyes. Standard procedure that barely needs mentioned, I know, but I might as well cover my ass on that one to be sure. There will be a hentai room during the late hours. So, by extension, I assume the more mature artwork can be a little more prominent at that time. Use common sense and you should be fine. Oh, and while this isn't a furry convention, I think the close proximity of this convention in terms of distance warrants it being added to conventions under it's own category.

yeah, David is a good friend of mine and asked me if I'd run a fursuit-making panel... so I agreed. I'm sure it'll be my downfall T_T Also, I think I'll do a panel on general sewing technique as well. I wish there was someone more experienced than myself to do a panel, as I'm pretty new at it myself, and it feels like the blind leading the blind.

Ive only sat inon one panel and it was for /b/. It just seemed like them talking about how they were introduced, how they started and then answering questions. Im pretty sure you can fill up and hour or a half hour of talk time if you can just make up some simple event organizing.
Like so:
1. Introduce who you are, how long you've been in the fandom, how long you've been sewing, who youre inspirations are etc etc. Pretty much just start out with telling who you are and where you come from. 2. Explain everything you can about suiting and the different types. Mascots, toony, realism, beastpaint, suit pieces and parts, acting, fitting the part, quads, bipedal, digitigrade, mechanical enhancements, where to buy products, offer sources where you picked up some tips. 3. Finish up with some answering of questions! o: If anything, you get your name and face out there for what you can do.
From what I understand of panels, you're basically just teaching a one subject class, but without the whole grading thing or student involvement.

Yeah, I know I can easily fill an hour with just sewing technique and fursuit CONSTRUCTION, and nothing to do with acting or performance. I could do another hour on performance too. I'm already planning to break it into two panels. One on sewing in general, and one on fursuit-specific stuff.

I volunteered to run a panel on fursuit construction, and I may also run a panel on sewing technique in general. I don't really have much experience in either subject, but since I'm local and I'm willing to do it, I end up doing it XD Help would be greatly appreciated.
The interesting thing is that this is an anime con, not a furry con... but there was request that there be some crossover. So I'm going to try to structure the panel in such a way that I give them as much info as I can that they can apply to any type of costume building, not just furry costumes.

I don't think the con needs a panel on costume performance, but i can get you in touch with the organizers so you can offer to help. Or, we could possibly work together on a panel on construction maybe, if you're comfortable with that and if we can organize and provide consistent guidance to the panel attendees.

As a big fan of the dawn of war end of the 40k universe, I would find the space marine costume awesome. Really really awesome. Still a Tau fan at heart though. Space commies rule.

If I do the Space Marine one I might get a little too into character and try to purge some aliens in the name of the Emperor..... For that one I'll have to do some fiber glass work to get everything formed correctly and fleshed out just right... Might need help with it. But the whole costumes revolving on if I can get the damn chainsword prop working so it revs and the chain spins.... Right now the motors being a pain in my fluffy little arse

I'm so close to buying an artists table but Im kind of afraid to because its the first con but i kind of want to just in case the first con is going to be the first and LAST one, you know? Its costs like $60 for the table, the admission adn the temporary business license.
Does anyone know how much a regular business license is anyways? Like, a permanent one? I know next to nothing about this.
I really dont want to get a table if it means getting like one commission for $10. Id only get one if it meant making nearly double the cost of the table and the temp business license. And I honestly have no idea what this con will look like compared to others so there's no way for me to gauge whether the cost is worth it.

There is no such thing as a "permanent" business license. You'll need a DBA (doing business as) which is about $21 bucks and takes 5 minutes to get. You'll then go online, pay $200 for the year to the City of Reno for a nevada state business license, and that's good for a year. Then you'll need a state tax ID, which costs $15 plus a $100 deposit, and a federal tax ID (which is free). You need to renew your stuff every year, and pay state and possibly federal taxes every 3 months. I will happily help you if you need assistance with it. However, I highly recommend a temporary Nevada business license. You will probably not recoup costs for the table / con. I don't really expect this convention to be very successful overall. :c I will attend, however, and support it.

Yeah. I think Ill wait to see how much of a massive failure this thing is. Ive asked and theres only 170 people registered right now with only 3 months left. IMO 170 people isnt a lot. Im better its mostly locals and theyre all 20 somethings likely from the college and/or still in highschool. While that tends to be the majority of other anime-based cons in my experience, they're also pretty culturally diverse and travel through states to attend. Reno isnt terribly culturally diverse. I mean, the fucking pride parade was canceled. WTF. We cant even set up a decent parade. My shitty hometown of 1200 people had parades.

We handle most of the business stuff for you, including taxes. It's easier for us that way.
Also, we have the GSR reserved for three years, we aren't going away soon. We're looking at breaking even if not making a profit this year. as for 170 people, that's PAID pre reg. We have more than that in pre reg total. We're expecting pick up as the con gets closer, and walk in registrations as well.
The Halloween party we ran last year got 200-ish people, this will get more.
